Four Princeton High School students recently had the unique opportunity to visit the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield as part of State Senator Li Arellano’s Youth Advisory Council.
The students selected to attend were Levi Boggs, Landon Davis, Angela Frost, and Elin Workman. During their visit, they engaged directly with state government leaders and gained valuable insight into the legislative process.
Throughout the day, students heard from a variety of guest speakers, including representatives from the Illinois State Police, State Representative Brad Fritts, State Representative Travis Weaver, and Assistant Secretary of the Senate Scott Kaiser. These speakers shared their experiences and discussed the roles they play in shaping public policy across Illinois.
The students also participated in a mock committee hearing based on a bill proposed by the Youth Advisory Council during its fall session, allowing students to experience firsthand how legislation is debated and reviewed before moving forward. The visit concluded with a guided tour of the Old State Capitol building.
This experience provided the students with an engaging, real-world look at government in action and highlighted the importance of civic involvement among young people.
