This past March, Princeton High School’s Spanish IV students, taught by Kelsey Sarver, had the opportunity to take the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy test. The State Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in another language. If a student receives this honor, they receive a special seal on their diploma, transcripts, and can actually earn college credits toward foreign language requirements. Using the same test, the students have the additional opportunity of being awarded the Global Seal of Biliteracy which is a resume-worthy opportunity to be globally recognized on their bilingual and biliterate abilities. Another honor possible from the same test is the opportunity to earn the The State Commendation toward Biliteracy. This is a recognition given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in another language. This year, the following awards were achieved: Lydia Johnson earned the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish & English. Kathy Maciczak earned the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy in Polish & English. Lydia Johnson, Haylee Mancini, and Kathy Maciczak earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy, Functional Fluency, in Spanish & English. Kathy Maciczak also earned this in Polish & English. Lastly, the following students earned the Commendation Toward the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish: Levi Boggs, Tessa Carlson, Landon Davis, Camryn Driscoll, Lydia Hardy, Ava Knaak, Matthew Lord, Kathy Maciczak and Haylee Mancini. This tremendous achievement was recognized at the PHS Awards Night on May 11, 2026 and is a recognition worthy of celebration. Their hard work over the last four years has given them the abilities to earn this honor!
